A short break that begins or ends at the airport sometimes wants the booking out there rather than in the centre, and that is possible. It is arranged separately from a city booking, because the one figure that governs everything in the centre does not apply to it.
The journey time is agreed first
The forty to sixty minute window covers central Amsterdam and stops there. For Schiphol and the hotels beside it, the journey time is worked out and written into the thread before anything is agreed, so the arrival is a stated time rather than an estimate carried over from a different kind of trip. Nowhere outside Amsterdam and those airport hotels is reached.
Half travels first, always
An airport booking carries half the fee in advance whatever else is true of it, including for a returning client who would pay entirely on arrival at a city address. The length of the journey is the reason: it commits a larger part of an evening than a tram ride across the canal ring does.
When it makes sense on a short trip
Mostly on a single night stay built around an early departure, where the room is already out there and moving into the city for the evening would cost the sleep the trip was meant to protect. Where the room is central, keeping the booking central is simpler and the window is shorter. Either way, say which in the first message on the booking page, since it changes the timings before it changes anything else.
